Prism for PTSD Treatment
A Mind Above is broadening its range of services to better assist individuals and families affected by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
What is Prism?
Prism for PTSD is an FDA-cleared, evidence-based prescription therapy designed specifically for PTSD treatment. This innovative approach involves patients interacting with a computer-based program while wearing an EEG headset. The therapy focuses on creating a safe, non-trauma-related environment, allowing individuals to develop skills to regulate and manage their PTSD symptoms more effectively. The treatment is non-invasive and requires no medication.
How Does Prism Work?
Studies indicate that PTSD is linked to heightened activity in the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for the fight–flight–freeze response. Prism is the first treatment for PTSD designed around an amygdala-based biomarker connected to mental health conditions.
This neurofeedback software uses EEG biofeedback to target the underlying causes of PTSD symptoms. It is intended to be used as a supplementary (adjunctive) approach to help manage symptoms associated with PTSD.
What Happens During a Prism Session?
During a Prism session, the patient sits in a quiet room in front of a computer screen. They wear an EEG headset similar to a swim cap with small sensors that tracks brain activity, much like a fitness tracker monitors heart rate.
As the session begins, the patient watches a computer simulation featuring restless avatars. The EEG headset measures their brain activity in real time.
The patient is asked to try different mental strategies such as thinking about a memory, feeling, or experience to help calm the avatars and make them sit down.
Prism analyzes the brain signals from the headset and calculates an amygdala-based marker. When the patient finds a mental approach that lowers this activity, the avatars begin to settle and become still. This process acts like a mirror, giving immediate feedback on what helps calm the brain. Over time, patients can practice and use these strategies outside the clinic to better manage PTSD symptoms.
